Fresh post-election violence claims lives in Northern states

Fresh post-election violence has claimed lives and houses in Kano, Kaduna, Zaria and parts of Adamawa and Katsina states. The clashes were said to have flared on Sunday night after it became apparent that the Peoples Democratic Party‘s presidential candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan, was leading in results declared for Saturday‘s presidential election.

Reports indicated that the violence continued on Monday, with the burning of the home of a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Ghali Umar Na‘Abba, by violent protesters in Kano.

In Zaria and Kaduna, churces and residential property, including houses belonging to some politicians, were destroyed while a number of people were reportedly killed. Residents of some Northern cities have fled their homes to army barracks, for fear of attacks.
